In brief
Total power exchange is community language, not literal transfer of every human right. Adults may use it for a 24/7 identity, a guiding ideal or a relationship with extensive but defined authority. Agreements vary over money, healthcare, work, family, sexuality and daily routines. Because the word total can obscure retained autonomy, responsible descriptions state practical limits, review mechanisms and an exit pathway rather than treating trust as proof that consent no longer needs attention.
Name delegated decisions, retained decisions, emergency exceptions, privacy, finances, healthcare, work, family and sexual boundaries. A relationship contract can aid communication but cannot create ownership or irrevocable consent.
Authority can be broad while still containing exclusions. Vague totality should not be used to fill gaps in favour of the person holding power.

Qualitative 24/7 research describes consent as contextual communication that develops with the relationship, not a one-time transaction. Check-ins may be formal or embedded, but dissent must remain possible and consequential.
A submissive role does not make silence consent. Changes in health, dependency, medication, housing or finances can alter freedom and capacity.
A continuing dynamic needs usable ways to dissent and review. Health, housing, finances, medication and dependency can change the freedom and capacity surrounding an earlier agreement.

Warning signs include fear of disagreement, punishment for seeking help, isolation, monitoring without agreement, deprivation of essentials and practical inability to leave.
Domestic-abuse and coercive-control laws apply according to conduct and circumstances. No private title, collar or contract displaces criminal law or employment, housing and financial protections.
TPE research remains limited and includes discourse analysis and small qualitative samples. It can illuminate lived meaning but cannot certify an individual relationship as safe, consensual or therapeutic.
Independent access to essentials and support is compatible with extensive power exchange. Research and relationship contracts cannot displace UK law, personhood or the right to leave.
